Awards

  • November 2019: Best poster and presentation at the Ocean Frontiers Institute conference in St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada.

  • June 2015: Alan Ansell Prize for best talk at the International Pectinid Workshop, Galway, Ireland. 

  • July 2014: KM Stott Award for best Environmental PhD at the University of York. 

  • March 2014: Prize for best talk at an Environmental Conference at the University of York.

Funding / grants

  • April 2021: $100,000 grant from the Nova Scotia Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture (NSDFA) to lead a climate change vulnerability assessment of coastal communities. 

  • May 2019: $13,100 grant from the Ocean Frontiers Institiute to conduct an aquarium-based study on seaweed bioindicators. 

  • March 2019: $27,000 grant from the Community of Arran Seabed Trust to survey a Marine Protected Area in Scotland.

  • February 2019:  $19,000 grant from the Nova Scotia Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture to sample effluents from fish farms and sewage plants.  

  • April 2017: $1,200 grant from the North Pacific Marine Science Organization to attend an early career workshop in Busan, Korea.

  • January 2016: $2,500 grant from the British Science Council to attend an early career workshop in Malaysia. 

  • June 2012: $10,000 grant from the Coommunity of Arran Seabed Trust to conduct a lobster survey in Scotland. 

  • April 2011: $190,000 grant from Fauna and Flora International for my PhD project.

  • Sept 2009: $8,500 in bursaries from the Marine Aggregates Levy Sustainbility Fund and the Sidney Perry Foundation to help support my Masters programme.  

Private contracts

  • July 2020: $1,800 contract from the Marine Environmental Observation Prediction & Response Network to make an educational science video. 

  • June 2020: $10,000 contract from Perennia Inc. to write a review on eelgrass and aquaculture interactions.

  • April 2020: $10,000 contract from perennia Inc. to write a review on offshore aquaculture regulation in Canada. 

  • February 2014: $3,400 private contract from the Sustainable Inshore Fisheries Trust to review the effects of scallop dredging in the UK.
