Project management
I have led fieldwork on remote islands, spent months at sea leading research cruises, I have applied and won a variety of funding grants and consultancy contracts, and operated my own consultancy business. None of these achievements would have been accomplished without effective project management.
To me, a great project manager is someone who:
-
Delegates tasks without ambiguity.
-
Communicates effectively.
-
Listens to the opinions of others.
-
Makes decisions after evaluating all evidence.
-
Sets deadlines so team members know when to complete their tasks.
-
Provides feedback, including praise and / or how to improve.
For my research cruises, I was the pricincial scientist on-board and primary communicator between the captain, deck crew, and science teams. I had to make effective decisions that maximised our working time at sea, but in a way that was safe for all involved. I organized all logistics, recruited scientists, organized governemt permits, tracked finances, reported progess to
funders / donors, and much more.
