Fish / shellfish tagging

Monitoring and surveys
I have been involved in a wide range of ecological surveying, monitoring, fieldwork, lab work, and social surveys, often in a
leadership / mangement role. Below are just a few examples of the types of projects I have been involved in.
Fish tagging
Working with commerical lobster fishermen, I tagged lobsters and tracked their spatial movements for several years. The tags were colour coded, had a unique number identifier, the name of our institution, and phone number.
SCUBA and Photoquadrat surveys
Investigating species abundance, diversity, and percentage cover of seafloor habitats.

Boat surveys
I've led a variety of research cruises on professional research vessels. I've collected field data on fish and invertebrates. Gear types have included beam and otter trawls, scallop dredges, grabs, corers, towed video cameras, and CTDs. I've dissected fish ear bones (otoliths), fish stomachs, scallops, shrimp tails, and more.
Baited remote underwater video (BRUV)
Sometimes the best way to see fish and other underwater wildlife is to leave some bait next to a recording video camera. Click here to see some of the footage.

Hydrographic sensors
Since 2019, much of my fieldwork has centred around deploying sensors for monitoring water levels, salinity, temperature, and water currents, flow, and discharge rates. I've also been doing this work in freshwater and tidal rivers, which has presented an exciting challenge.
Field certificates and qualifications
I have qualifications in SCUBA diving (PADI Divemaster), powerboating (RYA Powerboat II), sea survival (STCW 95) and radio (RYA VHF Radio Operator).
